St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born American to be declared a saint, established the first Catholic school in the nation in 1809. Today, there are 5,981 Catholic schools in the U.S., six of which are in the Diocese of Lake Charles. Those schools will join others across the country January 30 – February 5 to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week.

SULPHUR — When Benedictine monks are not praying, you can always find them working. It is part of their traditional motto, Ora et Labora (Pray and Work). At least 20 monks at Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey in the Diocese of Tulsa, Okla., have been using their time and talents to create the sacred work of art for the sanctuary at St. Francis de Sales Oratory.

The Office of Catholic Schools is in need of substitute teachers. Pay varies per school site and is based on experience. Contact Mrs. Dana Wimberly at the Office of Catholic Schools, 337-433-9640, Ext. 400, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. if you are interested.
