The Diocese of Lake Charles issued a statement on Tuesday, May 3, in response to a Politico report that a leaked draft opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, suggests the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade — the 1973 landmark case that legalized abortion nationwide. The following statement, with approval from Bishop Provost, reads:
“Abortion is evil, and the Diocese of Lake Charles remains committed to preaching the Truth and serving those in need regardless of legislative and juridical processes. We urge everyone to pray for an end to abortion and strive to preach the Gospel of Life.”
If the landmark case is ultimately overturned, as the draft suggests, abortion law would be left up to each individual state. A ruling by the court is expected in late June or early July.
