“[T]he moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”  Luke 1:44

Who are we?  And why are we here?   Just like St. Juan Diego, we are Mary’s children and we have come to see Mary. 

Our Blessed Mother chose to appear many times to many people over many centuries.   Very often she chose to appear to children.  She appeared to St. Bernadette at Lourdes.   She appeared to Lucia, Blessed Jacinto, and Blessed Francisco at Fatima.   And here on this continent she appeared to St. Juan Diego.  

We are Mary’s children.   Children are at the very heart of Mary.  Consider what happens when Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth.  Elizabeth is expecting to give birth to St. John the Baptist.   And when Mary’s greeting reaches the ears of Elizabeth, the baby John leaps in Elizabeth’s womb.   The baby John responds to the tender greeting of Mary.  “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb” (Luke 1:41).   “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.”   Those are the words of the Hail Mary that we Catholics pray every day.   The angel Gabriel gave us the first sentence.   St. Elizabeth gave us the second sentence.  

Who can take this away for us?   No one.   Only we can forget them.   We forget them when we behave not like children of Mary but sinful adults, willful adults who turn our backs on God’s will.  We forget these words when we embrace error and false teaching, when we stray from our Catholic faith revealed to us by Jesus Christ, the Son of Mary.

We are Mary’s children.  We are called like St. Juan Diego, St. Bernadette, Blessed Jacinto, Blessed Francisco and Lucia to be children.  The Kingdom of God belongs to children.   We want to return to our innocence.   We want to live simple and good lives, away from the filth of the world that corrupts our souls.    God’s love cannot fill a soul that is clogged and suffocated with the concerns of the flesh and of the world.  God wants a pure heart, the soul of a child.  

St. Elizabeth tells our Blessed Mother, “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled” (Luke 1:45).   Belief is required of a child.   Mary appears to children because she was a child herself.   Her faith was childlike.   She accepted God’s will without question.   She had a child’s heart in an adult body.   She embraced God’s will and took into herself His Son.  

Are we ready to follow Mary’s example?   Who are we?  We are her children.   Why are we here?  Because we want to imitate Mary in her childlike acceptance of God’s will.   Will we follow her?   Will we imitate her?   Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!      
 

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE

¿Quiénes somos? Y ¿por qué estamos aquí? Al igual que San Juan Diego, somos hijos de María y hemos llegado a ver a María.    

Nuestra Madre Bendita decidió aparecer muchas veces a muchas personas durante varios siglos. Muy a menudo ella eligió aparecerse a niños. Ella se apareció a San Bernadette en Lourdes. Ella se apareció a Lucía, al Beato Jacinto y al Beato Francisco en Fátima. Y aquí en este continente se apareció a San Juan Diego.

Somos hijos de María. Los niños están en el corazón de María. Consideren lo que sucedió cuando María visitó a su prima Isabel. Elizabeth estaba por dar a luz a San Juan Bautista. Y cuando el saludo de María alcanzo los oídos de Isabel, el bebé Juan salto en el vientre de Elizabeth. El bebé Juan respondió a la tierna felicitación de María. "Cuando Elizabeth oyó el saludo de María, el niño saltó en su vientre" (Lucas 1:41). "Ave María, llena eres de gracia, el Señor es contigo. Bendita eres entre todas las mujeres y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre, Jesús. Son las palabras del Avemaría, que los Católicos oramos todos los días. El Ángel Gabriel nos dio la primera frase. Santa Elizabeth nos dio la segunda frase.

¿Quien puede quitarnos esto? Nadie. Sólo podemos olvidarlo. Nos olvidamos cuando nos comportamos no como hijos de María sino adultos pecaminosos, adultos intencionales que dan la espalda a la voluntad de Dios. Nos olvidamos de estas palabras cuando abrazamos el error y las falsas enseñanzas, cuando nos apartamos de nuestra fe Católica revelada a nosotros por Jesús Cristo, el Hijo de María.

Somos hijos de María. Estamos llamados como San Juan Diego, Santa Bernadette, el Beato Jacinto, el Beato Francisco y Lucia a ser niños. El Reino de Dios pertenece a los niños. Queremos volver a nuestra inocencia. Queremos vivir una vida simple y buena, lejos de la inmundicia del mundo que corrompe nuestras almas. El amor de Dios no puede llenar un alma que está obstruida y asfixiada con las preocupaciones de la carne y del mundo. Dios quiere un corazón puro, el alma de un niño.

Santa Elizabeth dijo a nuestra Santísima Madre, "Y bienaventurada eres que creíste, porque se cumplirán las cosas que te fueron dichas de parte del Señor. " (Lucas 1:45). La creencia es lo que requiere en un niño. María se aparece a los niños porque ella misma era una niña. Su fe era como la de un niño. Ella aceptó la voluntad de Dios sin duda. Ella tenía el corazón de un niño en un cuerpo adulto. Ella abrazó la voluntad de Dios y tuvo en ella a su Hijo.

¿Estamos dispuestos a seguir el ejemplo de María? ¿Quiénes somos? Somos sus hijos. ¿Por qué estamos aquí? Porque queremos imitar a María en su aceptación como una niña de Dios. ¿Vamos a seguirla? ¿A imitarla? Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ruega por nosotros!
